Frank D. Chase diary, 1875-1876.

Diary kept by teenager Frank Dudley Chase of Dedham, Mass., 1 Jan. 1875- 31 Dec. 1876. Chase faithfully recorded the daily weather and events of note in Dedham, and his diary captures his life during his last year of high school and subsequent year of day labor before starting MIT in 1877. While in school, Chase described his work as a delivery boy for the Dedham Transcript, school assignments, and after school activities with friends such as skating on Jamaica Pond and sledding. After high school, Chase described his drawing classes in Boston; and his work with his father and uncle surveying, leveling, removing stones, building stone walls, haying, and cutting wood, among other labors. Also includes Chase's description of a beach vacation in Hull, Mass., Aug. 1876; and a description of his visit to Philadelphia to see the Centennial Exhibition, Oct. 1876.

The Centennial Exhibition of 1876 marked the 100th anniversary of American freedom. The celebration took place in Philadelphia from May 10 to November 10 and attracted over eight million visitors.
