The H. Biemann Othersen, Jr., M.D., Papers, 1960-2008, document Dr. Othersen's career at the Medical University of South Carolina and his professional activities. The bulk of the collection concerns Dr. Othersen's research interest in improving pediatric surgical techniques for a variety of surgeries including esophageal, hernias, thoracic, tracheal, and tumors. Other topics of personal and professional interest include the history of handwashing, the history of MUSC, and medical museums. The collection also includes reports and presentations by Dr. Othersen for the American Pediatric Surgical Association and Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. Dr. Othersen received a number of honors and citations during his career. The collection contains the original awards and plaques representing those honors for which his is most proud. Also included are plaques of his surgical licenses, diplomas and residencies certificates. The collection includes a number of files containing patient information. These files are restricted. Access will be granted on a case-by-case basis. Record types include correspondence, reprints, articles, reports, speeches, research notes, lecture notes, plaques and awards, photographs, negatives, slides, film, cassette tapes, VHS tapes, and DVDs. The collection is arranged into four series: (1) Audiovisual, (2) Professional, (3) Research, and (4) Writings.

Othersen, Jr., H. Biemann (1930- ), was born in Charleston, South Carolina in 1930. He earned his B.S.M. from the College of Charleston in 1950 and earned his M.D. from the Medical College of South Carolina (MCSC) in 1953. He spent the following 12 years pursuing his post-graduate surgical training at Philadelphia General Hospital, the University of Pennsylvania, MCSC, the Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, and Massachusetts General Hospital.
