Benjamin thanks Edwin for the conversation for the December edition of The Arena. He enclosed some suggestive questions, both subjects,"America and the Future" and "The Present-Day Mission of Poetry' or "The Poet as a techer".I need it in my hands by the 20th of this month. Do you have any literary notes or book announcements, i can have them announced in ou book department.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
