The League of Women Voters was founded in Savannah on May 6, 1920 by Miss Mildred Cunningham. The organization grew out of the Equal Suffrage Party of Chatham County that had worked for the passage of the 19th Amendment. The group held its first meeting at the public library in Savannah, and was originally known as the Savannah League of Women Voters.
