Papers, 1892,1966, include: oversized certificates (4) of appointment of Mertz as Postmaster of Saint Charles (Mich.), 1897, 1900, 1904 and 1909; Postmaster correspondence concerning postal affairs, delivery routes, appointments, etc., 1892, 1896-1913, 1922-1930; and political correspondence from Michigan Republican Party members, 1930-1949. The oversized manuscripts are filed separately in a map cabinet. Also included is a Scrapbook, 1905-1966, of newspaper clippings, photographs, postcards, funeral cards, obituaries, programs, invitations, notes, letters, table favors, and greeting cards of the William C. Mertz family and other people of Saint Charles (Mich.); Grand Rapids, Detroit, and Saint Charles (Mich.) ministers; and Mich. politicians Fred Green, Chase S. Osborn, and U.S. Rep. Joseph W. Fordney. The scrapbook's pages are acidic and loose. It has a brown cover entitled "Scrap Book" in gold letters.
