Letters from James Franklin Keen, a carpenter working in New Bedford, Mass., to his brother William. He reports on the effects of the Civil War in their home town of Acushnet, Mass., and in nearby New Bedford, Mass., giving details about quotas and the draft, news of battles (e.g. Fredericksburg, 1862), war casualties among mutual friends and family, the recruiting of African Americans for the U.S. Army, and local politics. James Keen was evidently not a supporter of the Republican Party.
