Paul and Ann Guggenheim photograph collection, 1937-1946.

The Paul and Ann Guggenheim Photograph Collection consists of four negative albums containing approximately 400 images, and a folder of photocopied photographs with handwritten identifications. The images document the Smithsonian Aleutian expedition of 1937, Paul Guggenheim's time in medical school (1937-1939), and Paul Guggenheim's time in the Aleutian Islands as a medical doctor during World War II.

Ales Hrdlicka led a Smithsonian Aleutian expedition for three field seasons (1936-1938) to explore the archeological resources of the Aleutian Islands. Team members included William Laughlin and Paul Guggenheim. Guggenheim mapped additional prehistoric sites during World War II while stationed in the Aleutians as a medical doctor.
