The Orgone Institute was founded in 1942 by Wilhelm Reich (1897-1957), psychiatrist and psychoanalyst (Vienna, M.D. 1922), who emigrated to the U.S. in 1939. First living in New York and later in Maine, he developed a therapy outside accepted psychoanalytic techniques. Aurora Karrer Reich, born in 1924, met Wilhelm Reich while attending a conference at the Orgone Institute during the summer of 1955. Later that year she entered into a common-law marriage with Dr. Reich and subsequently gave up her position as a medical technician at the National Institutes of Health.
