Records, 1867-1897, of the Marshall Manufacturing Company of Manchester [later, Richmond], Va., a cotton manufacturer. Include correspondence with clients as well as ledgers and account books. Includes correspondence, 1891-1897, consisting of letters to company secretary Patrick Hamilton Baskervill concerning cotton and textile prices and satisfaction with shipped goods, with some folders containing receipts and other financial items; letterpress letterbooks, 1886 July 13-1888 April 13 and 1888 April 13-1890 July 21, containing copies of letters sent to individuals and businesses by Marshall Manufacturing employees John L. Bacon and Birkett D. Fry; and account book, 1867-1876, containing records of bags of cotton shipped to various companies, and including transactions for items such as guano, lamp wick, cop waste, and burlap. Also include ledgers, 1869-1877 (noting expenses for wages, cotton purchases, and "sundries." Contains records of costs for new machiney, insurance, weaving, carding, and construction; also contains information (p.1) about the sale of another cotton manufacturer, James River Manufacturing Co., to the Marshall Manufacturing Company), 1879-1887 (concerning shipments of cotton cloth), and 1882-1883 (containing records of expenses, including those for cooks, chambermaids, laundry, "dining room," nurses, and omnibus drivers, with various beneficiaries); "Sales and Order" book, 1881-1889, containing accounts of cotton bale shipments and freight charges; and miscellaneous items, 1867-1896, arranged alphabetically by subject, including miscellaneous correspondence (chiefly requests from individuals for employment), "The Cultivator & Country Gentleman (1896 issue), financial items, and payroll and production reports.

The Marshall Manufacturing Company (of Manchester [later Richmond], Va.), a manufacturer of textiles used for cotton bagging, was chartered in 1837. The secretary for the first few years of the company was Pizarro Edmunds. Jonathan L. Bacon (1812-1887) later served as president until his death, after which Gen. Birkett D. Fry (1822-1891), previously a secretary with the company, became president. In 1897, the company apparently ceased operations, but it might have merged with Old Dominion Cotton...
