The collection consists of audio recordings and an edited transcript of oral history interviews conducted by Judith Morgan with Ellen Eckis July to November 1998. Mrs. Eckis is a member of the Scripps family and widow of Scripps Institution of Oceanography director Roger Revelle. Mrs. Eckis describes her experiences including her youth, her relationship with her aunt Ellen Browning Scripps, her education, marriage to Roger Revelle and her lifelong association with the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the University of California, San Diego. She describes her experiences in Norway in 1936, when her husband was spending a post-doctoral year at the Geophysical Institute in Bergen. She describes her wartime experiences in Washington, D.C. during her husband's service in the navy. She describes her life, family, friends and associates in La Jolla, California. She discusses the California Loyalty Oath Controversy of 1951. She describes the efforts by her husband and others to establish a university campus in San Diego, and opposition encountered by campus opponents. She describes her experiences living in Cambridge, Massachusetts where her husband served as director of the Center for Population Studies at Harvard from 1964 to 1978. She discusses her friends and life in La Jolla and expresses her opinions on philanthropy, community and university life.

Ellen Browning Scripps was born in Parish, London on October 18, 1836. Ellen was exposed to books and publishing at an early age.
