Naomi Savage papers on Man Ray, 1917-2005.

Correspondence, exhibition files, writings and notes, artwork, printed material, photographs and transparencies. Also found is an audio cassette of a lecture delivered by Man Ray. Naomi Savage's correspondence with museums and galleries seeking to exhibit works of art by Man Ray owned by Savage, publishers requesting permission to reproduce images of Man Ray's work in catalogs and art history textbooks, and letters from students, art historians, and others inquiring for information on Man Ray; also included are postcards and greetings cards from friends. Of interest, is a 1942 letter from Isamu Noguchi when he was in Arizona to Man Ray describing the difficulty of adjusting to his new environs in Arizona; he also mentions his taking up pottery and woodworking. Man Ray exhibition files include solo and group shows at Galerie Anderson Mayer, Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), Philadelphia Museum of Art, Prakapas Gallery, Vered Gallery, Ronny Van de Velde Gallery, Helen Serger, La Boetie, Inc., Serpentine Gallery. Folders contain correspondence; press releases; newsletters; printed material;condition reports; consignment letter, invoice, and receipt; and some photographs of exhibition installations. Also Included are other exhibitions, auction sales of Man Ray's artwork at Sotheby's and Christie's in 1991; miscellaneous auction catalogs; exhibition posters (1966-1981); and miscellaneous printed material. Found is a sound recording of a lecture by Man Ray presented at the Los Angeles Museum in 1966. Writings and notes include typescripts of pieces on Man Ray and Juliet Man Ray: THE KISS OF TIME TO LIGHT: MAN RAY, LEE MILLER, AND SURREALIST PHOTOGRAPHY by Andrew Dickensen and JEWEL FROM THE BRONX: JULIET MAN RAY by Judith Young Mallin; assorted writings; a list of publications on Man Ray owned by Naomi Savage; and various notes. Artwork consists of an artist's proof of a print by Paul Levitt for Man Ray's autobiography, SELF PORTRAIT published in 1963. Printed material includes obituary notices on Man Ray; clippings on Man Ray, Juliet Man Ray; various news clippings; and two articles by Man Ray: MAN RAY PORTFOLIO: PHOTOGRAPHY AND TEXT (1943) and RUTH, ROSES, and REVOLVERS (1944); and reproductions of artwork by Man Ray. Also found is a German translation of Walter Benjamin's MAN RAY: PHOTOGRAPHY FROM THE OTHER SIDE by Tristan Tzara. Photographs include images of Man Ray, Man Ray and Juliet Man Ray, Juliet Man Ray with others, the grave site of Man Ray and Juliet Man Ray, Marcel Duchamp, Teeny Duchamp, and various family, friends, and colleagues. Many of the photographs of family and friends were taken by Naomi Savage; individuals in the photographs are not identified. Also found are photographs of various sites, including Man Ray's residence in Paris in the 1920s, exhibition installations, artwork by Man Ray, and transparencies of paintings by Man Ray.
