George Thomson military commissions, 1771-1781.

The collection contains two military commissions in the Virginia Militia issued to George Thomson. The older commission appointed Thomson a captain in the Albemarle County, Virginia, militia. The document is dated July 11, 1771, and was issued and signed by William Nelson, "President of His Majesty's Council, and Commander-in-Chief of the Colony and Dominion of Virginia." The document identified Thomas Jefferson as the lieutenant and chief commander of that militia unit. The second document, dated November 22, 1781, appointed Thomson lieutenant colonel of the Fluvanna County, Virginia, militia. This document was issued in the name of the Commonwealth of Virginia and signed by Virginia's lieutenant governor, David Jameson.
