Autograph notes and corrected proof sheets of A.C. Swinburne [manuscript], 19th-20th century.

(1) A portion of the proof sheets of the first portion of Swinburne's elaborate study of Shakespeare, as it appeared in The fortnightly review, with substantial corrections in Swinburne's hand. Also includes 1 leaf of manuscript to be added to this article, The three stages of Shakespeare, which would eventually form part of Swinburne's Study of Shakespeare. (2) Notes on Shakespeare's mature life, which is divided by Swinburne into its various and varied periods of literary activity, probably prepared by Swinburne as the scheme of his Shakespearean study was in the course of elaboration and development. (3) Proof of Swinburne's Prologue to Doctor Faustus for inclusion in The Athenaeum, with correction in line 2. (4) A digest of the proposed arrangements and classification of the plays of Thomas Heywood, made by Swinburne before commencing work on Heywood for The age of Shakespeare.
