Son of Patrick Grant of Glenmoriston, Inverness-shire, Scotland, born May 20, 1734, he was "bred to the sea." In 1757 he was in the 17th Regt. and came to America, where he served in Forbes's campaign against Ft. Duquesne in 1758, and with Gen. Amherst in the Lake Champlain region, in 1759. In 1760 he commanded all the vessels on that lake. From 1763 until the Revolution he had direction of the British vessels on all the lakes; from 1778-1812 he commanded those on Erie, Huron, and Michigan. In 1...

Richard Howe, Earl Howe, was born in London, England, on March 19, 1726, the son of Emanuel Scrope Howe (1699-1735) and Mary Sophia Charlotte von Kielmansegg (1703-1782). Around 1735, he joined the crew of the merchant ship Thames, and in July 1739 he joined the 40-gun Royal Navy ship Pearl .
