Margaret Read was the first woman architect in Boulder. She was born in Iowa, spent her childhood in Missouri, and moved to Boulder with her family in 1910. She attended the University of Colorado for two years, transferred to the University of California, and after graduation her first solo project was the house at 740 13th Street which she built for herself and her elderly father. David Hull Holmes was born in St. Louis, Missouri, on 18 July 1874. He first moved to Boulder in 1895, married Helen Pierce in 1898, and moved to Tucson, Arizona, where he taught and practiced architecture. Returning to Boulder in 1917, Holmes became involved in tungsten mining until 1929. He was active in civic matters, and was chairman of the Boulder Chamber of Commerce highway committee that secured the first section of concrete paving on the road from Boulder to Denver. ...
