Samuel Dennis White was born on March 9, 1818, in Parishville, New York. He joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1837 and in 1841 married Mary Hannah Burton in Nauvoo, Illinois. After stopping for a time in Garden Grove, Iowa, the Whites traveled to Utah in 1850, and spent the next several years working on the Cedar City settlement. Temperance organization founded in Cleveland, Ohio in 1874. Campaigning against the use of alcohol and in favor of labor laws and prison reform, the W.C.T.U. became one of the largest and most influential women's organizations of the 19th century. It became global when the World W.C.T.U. was founded in 1883.
