John Pope letter, 1827 Feb. 10.

John Pope wrote this letter, dated February 10, 1827, to Governor Joseph Desha concerning the appointment to fill a vacancy as Jefferson County sheriff. Pope's letter discussed two applicants for the vacant sheriff's position, Win (?) Field and Levi Tyler. Pope recommended the selection of Field and dwelled on issues affecting the governor's choice, such as the recommendation of the appropriate county court. Another issue covered by Pope was a possible conflict of interest created by a contract Field held to carry the mail. Pope considered such a contract a "matter of individual responsibility & not a public office." Pope identified Field as his relative.
