John Broesamle was a distinguished Professor of History at California State University Northridge for over three decades, beginning his career at San Fernando Valley State College in 1968 until his retirement from California State University, Northridge in 1998. Dr. Broesamle received his B.A. degree in 1964 from University of the Pacific, then receiving his M.A. and PhD from New York's Columbia University. In 1988, California State University, Northridge commissioned Dr. John Broesamle, Professor of History at CSUN, to write the history of the university, the first to appear in published form. Dr. Broesamle took on the challenge of writing an open and accurate account of the university's short yet very eventful history. The author concentrated on the use of primary sources from the University Archives as well as the personal papers of former University administrators, faculty and alumni for the writing of his book. Broesamle also conducted a series of interviews with over forty past and current administrators, faculty members and alumni to help compose the framework of Suddenly A Giant. The records of the John Broesamle donation consist predominantly of articles, correspondence, newspaper clippings from the Daily Sundial and other related campus publications. Numerous photographs, speeches, memoranda, yearbooks, and CSUN fact books were utilized in Mr. Broesamle's research. Other material in the collection includes oral history interviews on cassette recordings and compact disks of forty individuals, as well as transcribed interviews.
