Alice Bourke Hayes was born on December 31, 1937 in Chicago, Illinois, and educated in local parochial schools. She received her B.S. in Biology from Mundelein College in 1959, her M.S. in Botany from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana in 1960, and her PhD in Biological Sciences from Northwestern University in 1972.
