Primarily letters received from family members; friends in his home county of Greenbrier, Va. (present W. Va.); and classmates from Ohio University (Athens). About one-fourth of the letters are from his father, Joseph Alderson. The letters contain writings on advice, politics & elections, family matters, local events, careers, expressions of sympathy, cholera, events at Ohio University & in Athens, religion, Independence Day, temperance work, and Sunday schools.
