Essay about tragic explosion of mustard gas, Dec. 1943, in Italian city of Bari, a port on the Adriatic; when German bombs hit a secret United States supply of mustard gas, more than 1000 civilian and military personel died; British and American officials suppressed news of the disaster due to security concerns. Article concludes that study of tissue from people who died or suffered injuries in this tragedy contributed to use of mustard in the treatment of Hodgkins' disease and leukemia.
