United States Forest Service collection, 1870-1981.

Collection includes field diaries, newspaper clippings (1907-1934), reports of the Chief of Forest Service, correspondence, section plats, U.S. Forest Service reports, ledgers, notebooks, booklets, and interviews. Also included are White Pine Blister Rust reports (1925-1952) primarily from Eastern states, and oral history interviews conducted by Herb Schwan. The largest proportion of images are from the California National Forests and Colorado's Pike National Forest. They document conditions on Forest Service lands, activities of the Rangers, and public use of the land. Lantern slides document soil and erosion conditions primarily of California in the 1920s-1930s.

The evolution of the USDA Forest Service is rooted in the General Provision Act of l89l in which Congress authorized the President to designate particular areas of the forested public domain to be set aside as "reserves" for future use.
