The accession consists of original film, outtakes, and workprints documenting expeditions of the R/V Alpha Helix during the Alpha Helix Program undertaken at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography between 1966 and 1980. The films were made by R/V Alpha Helix captain and crew members including Gary Coleman, Bob Haines, and Walter Schneider on expeditions including Bering Sea Expedition and Eniwetok Expedition. They were intended to be shown at scientific meetings. Most of the film is silent. Almost all of the film is color. The films include footage depicting R/V Alpha Helix in San Diego and at expedition locations in Antarctica, the Pacific, Galapagos, Bering Sea, and other locations. The film includes footage of scientists at work including Per F. Scholander and William A. Dunson.
