At the request of Kent State University President Robert I. White, the Commission on K.S.U. Violence was formed soon after the May 4, 1970, shootings on campus. The Commission was in existence for nearly eleven months, from May 1970 until April 1971. During that span of time, the group, chaired by Dr. Harold Mayer, met frequently and gathered information regarding the events surrounding the shootings. The 20th Commemoration of the Kent State shootings, held in 1990, remains one of the largest-attended of all the annual gatherings. Preparations had begun a few years in advance, culminating in the creation of the May 4 20th Anniversary Commission, at the behest of President Michael Schwartz, in 1989.
