The 20th Commemoration of the Kent State shootings, held in 1990, remains one of the largest-attended of all the annual gatherings. Preparations had begun a few years in advance, culminating in the creation of the May 4 20th Anniversary Commission, at the behest of President Michael Schwartz, in 1989. Paul Barton-Kriese was a Kent State University graduate student from 1969 to 1973, and present at the University during the tragic events that took place in May of 1970.
