James Huebner began work as a student on the main campus of Kent State University in 1975. Two years later, he became an active participant in the May 4th Coalition. As a member, he sought to prevent construction of the new gymnasium annex in the center of the campus, the site of the May 4, 1970 shootings. The 20th Commemoration of the Kent State shootings, held in 1990, remains one of the largest-attended of all the annual gatherings. Preparations had begun a few years in advance, culminating in the creation of the May 4 20th Anniversary Commission, at the behest of President Michael Schwartz, in 1989.
