The 20th Commemoration of the Kent State shootings, held in 1990, remains one of the largest-attended of all the annual gatherings. Preparations had begun a few years in advance, culminating in the creation of the May 4 20th Anniversary Commission, at the behest of President Michael Schwartz, in 1989. Jerry M. Lewis (1937-), professor emeritus of sociology, was a sociology professor at Kent State University from 1966 to 1996. He obtained a bachelor's degree from Cornell College, a master's degree from Boston University, and a doctoral degree from the University of Illinois (1970). Dr. Lewis was a witness to the shootings on the Kent State University campus on May 4, 1970, and has been involved in researching, memorializing, and lecturing about this tragic event.
