This collection consists of drafts and manuscripts for seven of Paul Horgan's novels. Printer's proofs are included with two of the titles, and several book jacket designs accompany one of the manuscripts. Manuscripts for published titles include: No quarter given (1935), which, in early drafts was entitled, "The Climate of illusion, "; Main line west (1936); A Lamp on the Plains (1937); Far from Cibola (1938); Habit of empire (1938); and The Common heart (1942).

Horgan (1903-1995) was born in Buffalo, N.Y. and spent his youth in New Mexico. He attended the Eastman School of Music, 1923-26, where he studied voice and participated in operatic productions. After leaving the Eastman School he turned to a career in writing, publishing many fiction and non-fiction works, for which he won two Pulitzer prizes and a Bancroft Prize.
