Notes on James Madison's bequest to the University of Virginia Library [manuscript], 1981

Notes collected about an article on James Madison's contributions to the University Library, eventually published in "Chapter and Verse." Madison not only established many private book funds, but also bequeathed his own library to the University at the time of his death. Also included are copies of the Madison Family Papers and Minutes of the Board of Visitors (1837 Aug 17), as well as an article by University library Harry Clemons titled "The University of Virginia Library, 1825-1950: Story of a Jeffersonian Foundation."

James Madison (1751-1836) was the fourth president of the United States, born in Port Conway, Virginia. He was a member of the Virginia legislature from 1776 to 1780 and from 1784 to 1786, and the Continental Congress from 1780 to 1783.
