The Newberry was founded on July 1, 1887 and opened for business on September 6 of that year. The Newberry’s establishment came about because of a contingent provision in the will of Chicago businessman Walter L. Stephen Williams (1693-1782), Congregational clergyman, was born in Deerfield, Mass. Williams played an important role in establishing the Stockbridge mission to the Housatonic Indians in western Massachusetts in 1734 and in securing the services of the Rev.
