Signal Service Corps ledgers, 1872-1900.

This Collection contains an incomplete record of meteorological data in Salt Lake City, Cedar City, and Corinne, Utah, from 1872 to 1900. These ledgers document temperature, humidity, storms, and fatal tragedies, such as lightning deaths in the state. The data is compiled in eight books. Some of the pages are very fragile. Additionally, the ink has smeared on some pages, making them unreadable. Ledger five has a frail binding and some loose pages.

Congress passed a resolution creating a national weather service on February 9, 1870, and it was signed into law by President Ulysses S. Grant. This new law directed the Secretary of War to take meterological observations and provide warnings of approaching storms. The Brevet Brigadier General Albert J.
