Papers, 1838-1986.

Collection consists of correspondence, literary manuscripts, notebooks, commonplace book, lecture and reading notes, financial papers, and property drawings. The papers relate chiefly to Sargent's writing, both poetry and prose, his teaching at Harvard University, his membership in the Tavern Club, his conversion to Catholicism, his involvement in Catholic societies, notably the St. Clement Society. Letters received include those from Jacques Maritain. Sargent served as a trustee of the Boston Athenaeum, founded Commonweal (a Catholic literary magazine), served as President of the American Catholic Historical Society and the American Catholic Poetry Society. In the collection is a group of letters written by Sargent to his family while he served in World War I, as well as his childhood notebooks. Another significant group of letters were received by Louise Sargent from Leonard Feeney, a Jesuit priest, who wrote to her nearly every day for a period of roughly ten years. The manuscript material in the collection consists of published and unpublished works written by Sargent. Most reflect his Catholic faith. The works are mainly fiction and biographies.
