Philip G. Auchampaugh joined the University of Nevada history faculty in 1941, and was considered an authority on the era of President James Buchanan. A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., he graduated from New York College for Teachers in 1920, and received his advanced degrees from Syracuse Universityy in 1921, and Clark University in 1924.
