Sydney K. Smith papers, 1874-1882.

This collection consists of the papers of Sydney K. Smith of St. Louis, Missouri. Items include a 1874 payroll voucher for Lt. Wheeler Wade of Company D, Kentucky State Guard, and his 1875 payroll claim signed by Quartermaster General Fayette Hewitt. Other items are business and personal letters, dated 1877-1882, to Sydney K. Smith from his brother D. Howard Smith, Jr. of Frankfort, Kentucky; A.H. Sinclair of Georgetown, Kentucky; and John C. Russell, attorney in Louisville.

Historical note: In 1860 the Kentucky Militia was replaced by the Kentucky State Guard. During the Civil War the State Guard suffered from the same divided loyalties which were indicative of Kentucky as a whole. It was reestablished in 1878, with the primary focus on controlling civil disturbances including feuds, riots, strikes, and lynchings. In 1912 the State Guard became the Kentucky National Guard.
