Arthur E. Du Bois' papers include the articles and poetry that he wrote throughout his career. For several years, he made his own Christmas cards in which he wrote a poem and these are included in the collection. The scrapbooks contain photo clippings of his favorite authors.

Arthur E. Du Bois was born on Jan. 7, 1904, in Bethel, New York. He graduated with a B.S. degree from Union College in Schenectady, N.Y. in 1924. He received his M.A. degree from Syracuse University and his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University. Du Bois began his career as an English instructor at Syracuse University in 1924 and left in 1928 to study at the University of Chicago under a technological fellowship. The 20th Commemoration of the Kent State shootings, held in 1990, remains one of the largest-attended of all the annual gatherings. Preparations had begun a few years in advance, culminating in the creation of the May 4 20th Anniversary Commission, at the behest of President Michael Schwartz, in 1989.
