Letter to David Mitchell, 1818 Feb. 2 / C. Keiser.

This collection consists of one letter from C. Keiser (possibly Christopher Keiser born in Maryland and died October 10, 1819) to David Mitchell, Indian Agent for the Georgia Creek Agency. The letter states that the chiefs of the Cussita Indians are waiting for the money collected from the ferry on the Ocmulgee which falls to their shore. This letter also states that once the money is received, the Cussita will join the friendly Creeks at Fort Mitchell.

Fort Hawkins was the first white settlement of Macon, Georgia. It was constructed in 1806 on the site of the Old Ocmulgee Fields. The fort was named for Benjamin Hawkins who selected the site and recommended its establishment as a trading post. The fort was in operation from 1807 to 1821.
