Jacob R. Strate letter, 1879 October 9.

Letter dated October 9, 1879 from Jacob R. Strate that describes his discovery of a British soldier's grave near the Central of Georgia Roundhouse. In the letter Strate presents to the Georgia Historical Society a Spanish coin (1758) found in the grave.

Jacob R. Strate, born ca. 1827, was a carpenter and native of Newark, New Jersey. Strate came to Savannah in the 1850s and on July 9, 1857 married Fanny B. Thomas of Charleston. They had three children. Jacob worked as a machinist and carpenter for the Central of Georgia Railway Company from 1867 to 1881. He died on December 18, 1881 and is buried in Laurel Grove Cemetery.
