The collection consists of geographic files of Zbigniew Brzezinski as Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs from 1977-1981. The records include memoranda, reports, minutes of meetings, cables, and articles concerning the Carter administration's foreign policy in individual countries and regions of the world considered strategically important. The largest segment of the collection is that on Southwest Asia/Persian Gulf, which largely concerned the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan (1979) and the development of the Rapid Deployment Force to counter further Soviet aggression in that region. Also contains information on relations with China, Cuba, Iran, and the Middle East.

Zbigniew Kazimierz Brzezinski was born on March 28, 1928 in Warsaw, Poland. His father was Polish consul-general in Montreal during World War II.
