Justus H. Bradley diaries, 1831-1865.

Diaries kept by Justus H. Bradley, a traveling salesman based in the New Haven, Connecticut, area. In 1832 Bradley began working for John Warner Barber. Bradley's diaries record his travels selling subscriptions to Barber's publications. He began in Albany, New York, and eventually covered most of Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, Ohio, New Jersey, and parts of Canada. At one time he accompanied Barber on one of Barber's drawing trips, as Barber prepared for his "Connecticut Historical Collections" compilation. Bradley was very religious and much of the diaries are of a religious nature. In addition to the diaries, the collection also contains some of Bradley's account books and prospectuses for several of Barber's publications. Most of these include subscription lists. An additional item in the collection is the autograph and friendship album of Ellen E. (Buell) Ward. This may have entered the collection through the family of Bradley's wife, Mary (Ward) Bradley.
