David Leo Lawrence was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., on June 18, 1889, and was educated at the University of Pittsburgh. Lawrence's career in politics saw him serve as Secretary to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania under Governor George Earle from 1934-1939. In 1945 Lawrence was elected Mayor of Pittsburgh, a position he held for 14 years until 1959 when he was elected Governor of Pennsylvania.
