In 1863, a charter from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts authorized five Jesuits of Maryland Province of the Society of Jesus to incorporate as β€œthe Trustees of the Boston College.” Their South End school became the first chartered college to operate in Boston in September 1864, when twenty-two boys – with an average age of fourteen – enrolled and classes began. The Board of Trustees was established at the founding of Boston College in 1863 and for many years was the sole governing agency of the university. With the creation of a Board of Directors in 1968 the Board of Trustees retained certain responsibilities.
