Business records, 1846-1959 and undated, include: Correspondence and materials requested, 1908-1956 and undated; Correspondence of H.A. Horning, Superintendent of Buildings for the Company in Jackson (Mich.), 1909-1918; Correspondence about and with track blueprints, 1904-1930; and a few miscellaneous items, including train schedules and the New York Central System Jackson Trunk Daily Times record, 1955. Oversized rolled items include: Movement of Trains, Middle Division, 1908, and Track Schedules, Jackson, Mich., 1952 and 1956. Oversized flat items include: Movement of Trains, Allegan Division, 1912, and Proposed Trunk Line Road 47, St. Charles and Swan Creek Twps., Saginaw County, Jan. 24, 1921 (blueprint). 22 Volumes, 1846-1860 include: account, cash, ledgers, and time books, some with loose accounts and correspondence. Of note is the Foreman histories/Building structures book, ca. 1893-1903, describing biographical information, character, and work histories of the foremen and the age, structure, and repairs done to various buildings.

On March 20, 1837, legislation providing for work to proceed on three railroads and two canals in Michigan became law. One of the railroads -- the central -- was to connect Detroit and St. Joseph through the second tier of counties. Based upon preliminary work already done by the Detroit and St. Joseph Railroad Company (whose rights and properties were purchased by the state), the railroad was able to begin operation (at least as far as Dearborn) by the end of 1837.
