Smalley papers, 1862-1954 (bulk 1889-1922).

Correspondence, reminiscences, articles, manuscripts, and scrapbooks of news clippings relating to George Smalley's personal and professional activities as journalist and editor. The collection describes the workings of the press, state and local government, and outlaws he knew personally. Also present are materials of George's father, P.J. Smalley, relating to the newspaper business and politics in Minnesota. Principal correspondents include Carl Hayden, Thomas Campbell, George W.P. Hunt, James McClintock, and A. Mitchell Palmer. Published and unpublished material includes a typescript of his memoir My Adventures in Arizona, articles on the Spenazuma mining swindle, and his experiences as a reporter with outlaws and peace officers.

Palemon Jared Smalley was born on December 25, 1842 in Williamsburg, New York, the first of four sons born to Edmund Jewett Smalley and Frances Frick. At the age of four, Smalley's father moved the family to Sheboygan, Wisconsin and Smalley grew up on a number of farms and fledgling enterprises between Sheboygan, Lyndon, and Manitowoc until 1857 when Smalley's father bought a foundry in Manitowoc.
