Department of Lutheran Cooperation in Latin America correspondence files (1948-1968) include correspondence, reports, minutes, and publications concerning activities of the Department and its predecessor body, the Division of Lutheran Cooperation in Latin America (1951-1955). Files dating from 1948-1950 primarily concern the formation of the Division. Remaining files (1951-1968) contain discussion regarding the establishment and continual support of mission work, by the National Lutheran Council and the Lutheran World Federation, in Latin American countries including Brazil, Columbia, and Venezuela; placement of pastors. In Latin American Lutheran churches and missions; promotion and distribution of Lutheran religious material in the Spanish language; establishment and support of theological schools; cooperation in National Council of the Churches of Christ in the U.S.A. (NCCCUSA) Latin American mission programs; and sponsorship of the All-Latin American Lutheran Conference. Correspondents include NLC Division and Department officials, NLC participating church body mission boards, Lutheran World Federation Committee on Latin America (LWF-LA) officials, international and national church organization leaders, and U.S. Lutheran pastors and lay persons. Prominent correspondents include. Stewart W. Herman, Jr., Division and later Department executive secretary; and Guido Tornquist, LWF-LA director.
