William Salter papers, 1843-1907.

Contains letters written to Salter and notes written by him. Letters concern both personal correspondence and that relating to his affairs: church business, business of Iowa College, Salter's research into the history of the Dodge family, and other concerns. One letter, from James S. Graham in 1884, recounts his experience watching President Lincoln while he reviewed the 68th Illinois Infantry Volunteers.

Congregational minister, founder and trustee of Iowa College. Dr. Adams was a member of the Iowa Band of Congregational missionaries who came to Iowa in 1843. He served as a pastor in Mt. Pleasant, Davenport, Decorah and Eldora. He was instrumental in the founding of Iowa College in Davenport. The college subsequently moved to Grinnell.
