Chiefly bills, receipts, promisary notes and other business papers reflecting life during antebellum, Civil War, and Reconstruction eras, including 2 letters, 24 Mar. and 13 July 1830, Charleston S.C., from Thomas Milliken, discussing the possibility of McAfee's purchase of a plot of land in Charleston, sending bank notes for the loan, and requesting a mortgage on the property; invitation, 28 Aug. 1843, Chesterville, S.C., to attend the funeral of William Elder. Certificate, 26 Aug. 1844, documenting membership in the "Independent Order of Odd Fellows", Lafayette Lodge, No. 8, (Chesterville, S.C.); 2 letters, 22 May 1848, Union District, S.C., from Geo[rge] Douglass, to Mrs. Hannah Douglass McAfee, advising her re her property in case she should re-marry, and 8 Jan. 1849, congratulating her on her marriage to McAfee and requesting payment on a note. Document, 10 Apr. 1865, Appomattox Court House, Appomattox [Va.], signed by Col. A[sbury] Coward, 5th South Carolina Volunteers Infantry, granting permission for Sgt. W.S Westbrook, "a paroled Prisoner of the Army of Northen Virginia... to go to his home, and there remain undistrubed"; Westbrook served with the 5th S.C. Regt., Bratton's Brigade, Company B. Reconstruction-era materials include 2 letters, 20 June 1867 and 23 June 1872, written from Choctaw Corner [Clarke County], Alabama. by J.T. Jackson, re crop prospects and biographical news of his family; bills, 1868, form Chester, Babcock and Co., for medicines, seeds, and miscellaneous items. Nine over size items, 1867-1868, consist of accounts and six illustrated diplomas awarded to various men and one woman by the Chester Agricultural, Horticultural & Mechanical Association for "Best Stallion over 4 years old", "Reversable Plow", to Mrs. Lizzie Moffatt for "Ottoman", etc.; drawing, oversized sketch of chalet; album, c. 1842, poetry and pictures collected by McAfee.
