Daily morning reports for various units list regiment and company; commanding officer name; report date; place stationed; numbers of officers and enlisted men present for duty; special duty; daily duty; sick; under arrest; in confinement; total numbers of commanding officers present and absent; total numbers of enlisted men present and absent; numbers of commanding officers and enlisted men absent on detached service; with or without leave; in hands of civil authorities; aggregate numbers of soldiers, both present and absent; and aggregate number of soldiers given in last report. Reports also list any change in company composition since last report (e.g, number of commanding officers or enlisted men lost through death, transfer, resignation, or missing in action; number of commissioned officers and enlisted men gained throught promotions, transfers, enlistments), and remarks (e.g., soldiers reduced in rank; miles marched; recruits and horses required). Morning reports for Camp Butler also indicate infantry and cavalry units in camp; camp arrival date; and county recruited from. Beginning February 23, 1862, reports show the number of prisoners of war held at Camp Butler. Reports usually were signed by commanding officers. Morning reports are held for Camp Butler (Springfield); Camp Douglas (Chicago); Company E, 17th Regiment; 33d Infantry Regiment; and Company K, 140th Infantry Regiment.
