Karl G. Maeser was the second principal of Brigham Young Academy and served from 1876 until 1892. Under Maeser Brigham Young Academy established itself as one of the leading schools in Utah territory. Stephen L. Barrett was born in Logan, Utah, in 1934. His parents later moved to Phoenix, Arizona, and then to El Cerrito, California, where Barrett attended elementary and high school. He received a bachelor's degree and master's degree from Brigham Young University.
