Lawrence Chesterfield Bryant papers, 1942-1977.

Collection contains bound volumes of letters, documents, business records, research work, financial and legal papers, writings, and various other papers of Bryant. Most correspondence dates since 1968 and is personal in nature. Some material deals with his career and the compilation of his memoirs, but his writings deal with his position at S.C. State College. Included are the records of his genealogical research on lives of African-American S.C. legislators. Dr. Bryant graduated from Shaw University in 1940 and received several more advanced degrees elsewhere.

Dr. Bryant graduated from Shaw University with a B.S.S. degree in 1940. From then until 1947 he was a preacher, although he had no church. In 1947, he entered Howard University, receiving a Bachelor of Divinity degree in 1950. Later he received a M.A. degree from New York University and a doctorate in education from the University of Virginia in 1959.
