Journal, 1853.

This diary and journal of writing exercises was kept by Martha Foster in 1853. Part of the volume is missing, but the diary portion begins on January 8, and continues through January 30, 1853. The journal of writings includes descriptive pieces. One essay is about a gentlemen, John Anderson, that Martha finds quite attractive, and another about a handicapped child who could be a relative. Another work describes a house near Russellville, and yet another gives an account of Mammoth Cave. Also included are narratives on the benefits of travel, definitions of pride, politeness, joy, hope, and other attributes, essays on childhood, youth, old age and parental affection, and the necessity of reading to imporve one's mind. Lastly, there is a list of students at Nazarath Academy, where Martha attended school, and some rules for a "pretend" school Martha created for herself, her siblings, and some friends.
